What’s Happening with the Degrassi HBO Max Reboot? My Overall Thoughts on the Future of the Franchise

By now you’ve probably heard about the merger between WarnerMedia (owner of HBO Max) and Discovery Inc. into WarnerDiscovery earlier this spring, and the rumours that this has delayed the Degrassi HBO Max reboot that was originally supposed to start filming this month.

I’m not going to get into the details of that, because Degrassi Source has already created a very detailed timeline that has all the information. You can refer to that if you want to catch up on everything that we know so far.

This post is more going to be my thoughts on how the Degrassi brand is being managed what we can expect from the Degrassi reboot whenever it actually happens.

Sharing my ‘Degrassi Story’

This year Degrassi: The Next Generation is turning 20 years old, which means that I’ve been watching Degrassi for 2 decades (nearly 2/3 of my life!). Throughout that time I’ve gone through so many ups and downs, always with Degrassi by my side. Degrassi has always been there for me, whether as a distraction, form of entertainment, community, or comfort.

Today I’m doing something they I’ve never done on this blog before, and that is sharing my experience as a Degrassi fan from the first episode I watched to present day. I’m doing this for 2 reasons: (1) to show how special Degrassi is and how it has impacted people such as myself, and (2) to document all of my memories so I can look back on them for years to come.

In Defense of… Tristan Milligan

This year I’m planning on doing an “In Defense Of” series in which I choose a Degrassi character who is controversial in the Degrassi fandom and write about why they are a great character. And who better to start with than Tristan Milligan? Tristan is a character who went through a lot during his time on Degrassi. He was always the kind of character that people had very strong feelings about, but since the end of Degrassi: Next Class I personally feel that the fan hatred towards Tristan has only intensified. A lot of people don’t like Tristan because of the way in which he lashes out at other characters. Hopefully this post will help to bring some compassion and understanding to people who feel like they can relate to Tristan.

As a little disclaimer, this post is not meant to shame or criticize anyone who doesn’t like Tristan. We all bring our own experiences and points of view when watching Degrassi, and therefore we all have different interpretations of the characters and storylines. I firmly believe that this is what makes Degrassi so beautiful.

5 International Teen Dramas Degrassi Can Learn From

Since Degrassi Next Class ended in 2017, the teen drama genre has changed dramatically. Traditional TV networks are under increasing competition from streaming giants. And many of the players have shifted their focus to older demographics that are more appealing to advertisers. However, as North American teen shows become more and more rare (especially on network television), we have seen a rise in popularity for teen shows in languages other than English set and filmed outside of North America. While these series typically do not make a ton of money or get a lot of views, they have passionate and loyal fanbases on social media. When Degrassi does return, the producers will need to think about where Degrassi fits in with this modern teen drama landscape. Here are 5 superb international teen dramas that I think Degrassi can learn from when deciding on a new direction for the franchise.

Degrassi Status Update – February 2021

It’s now been almost 5 years since Degrassi last filmed an episode, and 3 and a half years since a new episode premiered. That’s a long time to go without Degrassi. To put this into context, this is the longest we’ve gone without a new episode of Degrassi since the break between School’s Out! and Degrassi: The Next Generation (almost 9 years apart). It’s safe to say that we are all missing our Degrassi fix.

Blog Love: Degrassi Tabloid

If you’re not reading Degrassi Tabloid yet – you don’t know what you’re missing!

Possibly the greatest addition to the Degrassi fandom in recent months, Degrassi Tabloid is a new Degrassi blog that literally makes up Degrassi news and posts it in hilarious ways.

Recent headlines include:
Golden-Voiced Ted Williams Responsible for Degrassi Meet & Greet Hoax
Degrassi’s John Bregar Celebrates Birthday…No One Cares
Luke Bilyk’s Brother Joins Cast of Degrassi; Bilyk Plots Show Takeover
Jordan Todosey Hits Rock Bottom, Begs Twitter for Followers

The blog has quickly become the highlight of my Degrassi day, as the sheer ridiculousness of it all has caused me to laugh out loud (literally) on numerous occasions. Hopefully Degrassi Tabloid continues to get more popular in our little Degrassi world. Bookmark it (if you haven’t already), and follow @DegrassiTabloid on Twitter!
