Degrassi Online Visits Much Music!

Last night for the season premiere, Ashley and myself were given the opportunity to hang out at the Much Music studio while they were filming the live hits. We got to meet Aislinn, Cristine, and Lauren Toyota as well as watch the episode live with them. We also got to watch them film the live hits during the commercial breaks.

It was so much fun to meet everybody! They were just as nice as you would expect. Aislinn and Cristine are definitely Degrassi fans in their own right! Ashley and I will tell you all about it in next week’s episode of Degrassi Talks (stay tuned)!

I was lucky enough to be able to take a few pictures while they were filming. Check them out in our gallery!

Degrassi Special Premiering on Much Music This Fall

Much Music posted their fall press release yesterday. While it doesn’t contain information about new Degrassi episodes this fall, it does mention a Degrassi special scheduled to air in October.

This likely means that Degrassi wont return again until 2012. Filming is currently on hiatus until October, and Much Music would’ve definitely announced new episodes in this press release if that was the case.

The Degrassi special is briefly mentioned towards the end of the press release:

DEGRASSI **All-New Special**Premieres October (TBA)
School may not be out in October, but the kids of DEGRASSI are in for a treat… or a trick with this one-hour gripping special.

Based on this description (“a treat… or a trick,” a “gripping” special), I would guess that this is another Degrassi Halloween special. No specific airdate has been announced yet, and there is no word on whether or not TeenNick will air it as well. Although, I think we can all assume that they will. I’ll keep you posted!

TeenNick Promo: Now or Never Week 3

Next week looks like it’s going to be a big one for Degrassi. We’ve got another drug storyline, more Anya/Owen, as well as the highly anticipated ‘Cake’ storyline.

Here is the TeenNick promo for next week’s episodes. Much Music hasn’t posted their promo yet (and I didn’t record it, because I just assumed they would post it)! But I’d keep an eye on Much Music’s Youtube Channel today if I were you. You can watch a LQ version of the Much Music promo right here!

Much Music Releases New Behind the Scenes Clips

It’s that time of the year again. The week before the premiere of the new season of Degrassi always gets a little crazy. Add this to the many behind the scenes clips that will be released in the next week or so. Much Music has started posting new BTS interviews with the cast. The first is with Munro and Justin, who discuss their characters and who is better for Clare (a very important question)!

Also check out this interview with Cristine Prosperi who plays Imogen in Season 11. She introduces her character, and talks about this being her first day on set!

I think we can expect a lot more of these little interviews from Much Music leading up to Monday’s premiere. Keep an eye on MuchMusic.com, and I’ll continue to edit this post as well.

EDIT: Much Music added interviews with Chloe & more with Justin today (July 14th)! Watch them right here.

Much Music Promo: The Kids Are Not Alright

We’re in the final stretch! That’s right Degrassians, we are less than 1 week until the premiere of Degrassi season 11. So it was no surprise when a new promo from Much Music came out earlier today. The promo focuses on Bianca and Drew with brief clips of Fiona, Clare, Jenna, and more. It also features the now popular slogan “The Kids Are Not Alright” (kinda catchy, yes?), and our first look at Zane (finally!).

Are you excited yet?? Let us know what you think of the new promo!

Much Music Announces Season 11 Premiere Party!

We’ve been waiting for this news for a while, and when Stephen Stohn said last week that there would be a special announcement today, many of us were able to guess right. It’s official: Much Music will once again be hosting a premiere party next week in Toronto!!

Based on the description on Much Music’s blog, the premiere party sounds like it will be similar to last year’s event. Like the Degrassi Takes Manhattan premiere, the event will take place in the parking lot outside of Much Music HQ. They will be screening the premiere episode at 9pm, as well as allowing fans to take pictures with the cast. From what we’ve heard on Twitter, the entire cast is expected to be there. Here is the schedule given in the press release:

5 p.m. ET – Much’s flagship show NEW.MUSIC.LIVE. hits the air with a full hour devoted to DEGRASSI, featuring interviews with the cast live in-studio and exclusive sneak peeks of the new season.

7 p.m. ET – The action moves to the parking lot where fans can get their pic taken with members of the cast. These photos will be uploaded to Much’s Facebook page where fans can tag themselves and become the envy of all their friends! Much’s own Lauren Toyota hosts a Q&A session, where fans can interact and learn about their favourite cast members and find out what to expect this season. Fans interested in attending can RSVP here. For fans outside of Toronto, the Q&A session will be available live by visiting MuchMusic.com.

9 p.m. ET – In the DEGRASSI Season 11 premiere, all the students are abuzz about THE Spring Break event – Keke Palmer’s concert. Newly single Sav is depressed post-Holly-J break-up, but a flirtatious encounter with a beautiful stranger perks him up when she tells him to meet her at the show.

For more information on how you can attend (and RSVP), visit MuchMusic.com!

I will of course be there with my massive camera around my neck, taking pictures and video to share with all of you. We will likely do a special Degrassi Talks vlog from Toronto (our first one!) and I’ll have a full report from the event! I can’t wait to see some of you guys at the event – it is sure to be a blast. And for those of you who can’t come, at least there will be a live stream!!

Media Responses to the FFA Controversy

The FFA/Degrassi controversy is continuing to make headlines this week. Various media outlets have commented on the situation, showing their support for Degrassi, and giving their thoughts on why this is still an issue. The Much Music article in particular, written by Much contributor Allison, goes beyond the FFA controversy and discusses the impact Degrassi has had on generations of young people. Here is some of what Xtra, Perez Hilton, and even Much Music had to say.

Xtra: Conservative group slams transgender plot line
During the two-part transgender episode, the organization Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) ran a public-service announcement and an online educational program on its website.
All I can say is thank goodness that for every rightwing bigot out there, there is also someone with an open mind and a willingness to educate people on different lifestyles and the struggles that many of us go through.

Perez Hilton: Boo! Florida Family Association Boycotts Degrassi Due To Gay/Transgender Characters
We continue to thank you for supporting an important cause and helping spread awareness/understanding about gay and transgender issues, Teen Nick!
As for the Florida Family Association, we can only hope that one of these days they’ll come to their senses and realize that they’ve been acting out of ignorance. Such a shame!

Much Music: Sex, Drugs, and Degrassi: Why We Need To Keep The TV On
In its 30 years on air it would seem that Degrassi has covered every topic imaginable. From the death of parents to the death of classmates, domestic abuse, homelessness, bullying and more, it was difficult to believe that any waters had been left unchartered by the Epitome production company. That was until the tenth season of the new generation hit MuchMusic and Teen Nick last fall and viewers met Adam Torres, played by the brilliant Jordy Todosey, the first transgender character on youth programming. Suddenly, Degrassi was once again reminding viewers and critics why the longevity, praise and loyalty that had followed the little show from Toronto was more than warranted – Degrassi was and is the institution that gives a voice to the voiceless in mainstream media.
The outpouring of support and acceptance of Adam’s character has been undeniable. When the episode My Body is a Cage aired, viewers discovered that Adam had been born Gracie and transferred to Degrassi as a result of bullying received because of his transgender identity. On the MuchMusic website viewers expressed compassion and understanding for the teenage character, with many relieved to finally see their struggle identified by a character on TV.

How has Degrassi impacted your life? Is there one particular storyline that made you look at things differently? Can you relate to a particular character? Send your story to DegrassiTalks@gmail.com, and we’ll share some of our favourites.

Degrassi Cast at the 2011 Much Music Video Awards

The Much Music Video Awards took place in Toronto last night, and several Degrassi cast members were in attendance. Munro, Charlotte, Ray, and Aislinn were there (along with Nina Dobrev, Drake, and the Degrassi producers). Check out pictures from the red carpet in our gallery! Also, click here to watch the Degrassi cast’s red carpet interview on Much!

In addition to walking the red carpet, Munro Chambers actually got to present an award on stage during the show. Check out a video of him presenting right here. Apparently he even made Lady Gaga laugh (who was watching from backstage). Awesome!

Degrassi Picked Up For A 12th Season!

In case you were wondering if Degrassi was going to come to an end anytime soon… this should calm your fears. Stephen Stohn announced on Twitter today that Much Music has picked up Degrassi for a 12th season. This is remarkable, given the fact that season 11 hasn’t even premiered yet. Season 12 likely wont begin filming until the year 2012. As Stephen mentioned on Twitter, I dont think I can remember a time a show was picked up this far in advance. We. So. Excited!
