Stephen Stohn on Leaked Episodes

Stephen Stohn has written another article about the need for strict copyright legislation in Canada. You can read what he has to say right here. In the article he talks specifically about Degrassi, and also mentions the leaked episodes problem. This is what he had to say about that:

Leaked episodes challenge Degrassi’s entire method of production. When episodes are leaked before they are broadcast, my primary concern is for the fans. We work extremely hard to develop storylines that are full of intrigue and suspense and build the anticipation by releasing sneak previews to our viewers.

It’s an art, and one of the ways to develop fan loyalty. Leaked episodes or portions thereof, spoil it for our fans and definitely lessen the impact of the story. No one ever wants to know the ending before the tale begins.

On a personal note, I hope that fans will refrain from sharing leaked episodes when Degrassi starts up again this fall. With episodes returning to a weekly format, I know that this will probably be impossible. But there are lots of fans who enjoy watching the episodes for the first time on TV unspoiled. We should respect their (& Epitome’s) wishes.

  1. I think episodes should only be leaked by fans AFTER they air.

The only episode I felt no remorse for watching leaked was the season 9 movie {I didn’t watch it until a few hours after it had aired in Canada}, because I found it quite unfair that America didn’t air it on Saturday or Sunday, because they could have.
