NEW YORK, July 21 /PRNewswire/ — TeenNick’s original two-hour Degrassi TV movie, “The Heat is On” (Monday, July 19, 9 p.m. ET), was a scorcher, setting a new record as the highest-rated and most-watched telecast in the net’s history with 1.2 million total viewers (+21% over the previous record-holder “Degrassi Goes Hollywood,” August 14, 2009 [977,000 P2+]).

“The Heat is On” also ranked as Monday night’s number-one rated telecast on all TV with teens 12-17 (4.2/665,000,+1300%) and females 12-17 (8.0/610,000, +1500%), besting the closest competitor (ABC Family’s The Secret Life of The American Teenager) by +23% and +33% respectively.

TeenNick also scored its most-watched week (7/12/10-7/18/10) ever with total viewers, fueled by the “Every Degrassi Ever” marathon, which posted high double-digit gains with teens 12-17 (+75%) and total viewers (+44%).

“The Heat is On” kicked off season 10 of Degrassi and the series’ six-week prime-time summer event, which features daily telenovela-style premieres every weeknight (Mondays-Thursdays at 9 pm ET now through August 26). Additionally, TeenNick will air a weekly two-hour encore of the week’s past episodes each Friday night (9-11 pm ET).

TeenNick’s latest press release gives a few more interesting details about the storylines of season 10 as well as the thought process going into this season. Here are the highlights:

Following a new original two-hour TV movie titled “The Heat is On” airing Monday, July 19 (9 pm ET), Degrassi will premiere in a prime-time serialized format for six straight weeks (Mondays-Thursdays at 9 pm ET) through August 26. Additionally, TeenNick will air a weekly two-hour encore of the week’s past episodes each Friday night (9-11 pm ET).

“When our partners at TeenNick approached us with the idea of a telenovela-style format, I was intrigued and really excited at the prospect of doing something so different in the 10th season of a series,” said Linda Schuyler, Co-Creator and Executive Producer of Degrassi. “Season 10 will give fans a lot more of the Degrassi they know and love. Although it may feel slightly different, the honest storytelling of the show will remain the same – a mandate that we believe has made the series a favorite with teens for so many years.”

The 10th season of Degrassi will further explore the lives of the students, as well as tackle many issues that are relevant to teens today including divorce, bullies, gender identity, community service, double standards, Internet safety, family dynamics, runaways and romance. Four fresh faces join the junior class and learn to navigate the waters of their new school, while the seniors have some big decisions to make with potentially harsh consequences. Meanwhile, the sophomores are ready to make their mark and in turn, stir up some drama in true Degrassi style.

Kyle over at Cable TV Talk has some news that TeenNick will now be premiering Degrassi Takes Manhattan on July 19th as opposed to July 16th as originally planned. Then, for the first week of season 10 (“The Boiling Point”), TeenNick will be airing the episodes Tuesday – Friday as opposed to Monday – Thursday. This means that TeenNick will be 1 day behind Much Music for the first week. However, by the 2nd week, TeenNick will be going back to the regular Monday – Thursday format and the two networks will be in sync.

Thoughts on this? It’s only 1 day behind Much Music, but it wont be as fun watching the premiere at separate times.

TeenNick’s Degrassi blog has revealed some new information about the new male characters in season 10.

The blog includes pictures from the carnival trailer of Adam, Drew, Eli and Fitz as well as a little bit of info about each of them. Apparently Adam and Drew are stepbrothers, Drew doesn’t do well in school, Eli drives a hearse to school, and Fitz likes smart girls. Read the full blog here.
