Degrassi Wins a Peabody Award!

The 70th Annual Peabody Awards were announced today by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. And I am proud to say that Degrassi has won for My Body is a Cage (Adam’s episode last summer)! The winners were chosen as the best in electronic media for the year 2010. Other entertainment programs honoured include The Good Wife and Temple Grandin, among others. This is what they had to say about Degrassi:

Degrassi (TeenNick): True to its history, the durable high-school serial’s two-parter about a transgender teen neither trivializes nor overdramatizes its subject.

This is such a special honour for Degrassi. It’s great to see the show get the recognition is deserves, and to be honoured alongside so many other forms of media. Check out the press release for the awards, or more information from the Canadian Press.

Justin Bieber Mentions Degrassi at the 2011 Juno Awards

Degrassi got a major shoutout from Justin Bieber last night at the Juno Awards! During the opening skit, Drake skypes with Justin. Justin starts talking about everything he misses about Canada (Tim Hortons, hockey, and DEGRASSI)! Justin says “the new season of Degrassi is starting” at around 2:27 of this video.

Degrassi was also briefly mentioned during Drake’s now-infamous Old Money skit! Check it out, because Drake was hilarious.

Degrassi Nominated for a GLAAD Award!!

Big congratulations goes out to the cast & crew of Degrassi this morning, as it was just announced that the show has been nominated for a GLAAD Media Award!!

Degrassi is nominated in the Outstanding Dramatic Series category. The show is up against Brothers & Sisters, Grey’s Anatomy, Pretty Little Liars, and True Blood.

You might remember that Degrassi has been nominated in this category before. In 2004, Degrassi was nominated for Marco’s coming out storyline. 4 years later, in 2008, they received a nomination for the Paige/Alex storyline. This year, Degrassi is receiving recognition for the groundbreaking Adam storyline, as well as the ongoing Riley/Zane saga.

The GLAAD Media Awards are an annual awards show organized by GLAAD to promote fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBT community in the media to build support for equality. Click here for the full list of nominations!

UPDATE: Stefan did a little interview talking about the nomination. Here’s some of what he had to say –
For the people in this building, it’s almost like getting nominated for an Emmy or an Oscar … It’s big news around here. We do pride ourselves on trying to tell really truthful stories.

I think there’s no doubt that more and more shows are introducing gay characters and I don’t think for any other reason except that there’s a large part of the audience that wants to relate to something

Degrassians and The Shorty Awards

Further proof that Degrassians own Twitter, our own Munro Chambers is currently in 6th place for the Shorty Awards’Best Actor on Twitter” race. As I write this entry now on Jan. 17 at 1:17pm ET**, Munro just moved up from 7th place. He is currently not far behind Glee’s Chris Colfer. The Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder is currently first.

The Shorty Awards are a unique way to honour the best people and organizations on Twitter. Nominations can be made through Twitter, and in February they will be narrowed down to 6 finalists in each category. Winners are determined by fans and experts.

Munro is not the only Degrassian who is doing well in the awards. Degrassi alumnus Nina Dobrev is currently 2nd for the “Best Actress on Twitter” category.

**NOTE: These are the standings as I’m currently writing this entry. They change frequently as more people submit nominations.

EDIT: Munro has moved up to 5th now.
EDIT #2 (Jan. 18th): Munro is now in 4th!!

Linda Schuyler Wins Academy Achievement Award

No surprise here. Degrassi executive producer & co-creator Linda Schuyer is being recognized with a special award at the 25th Annual Gemini Awards this year! Schuyler’s award is the “Academy Achievement Award,” and according to the press release she is being honoured for an “exceptional, outstanding, or ongoing contribution or service to the Canadian television industry.” Here’s more of what the press release had to say about her:

Linda Schuyler is best known for co-creating and executive producing the multi-award winning Degrassi franchise, comprised of The Kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi Junior High, Degrassi High, School’s Out, Degrassi Talks and Degrassi: The Next Generation, now known simply as Degrassi. This franchise, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2010, has won 20 Gemini Awards, two International Emmys, two Prix Jeunesses, two Teen Choice Awards, the Critics’ Choice Award and countless other international honours. In addition to Degrassi, Epitome Pictures, founded by Schuyler and her husband and producing partner Stephen Stohn, has produced Instant Star, the MOW X-Rated, and Canada’s first prime time soap opera, Riverdale. Schuyler is a founding member of the Association for Media Literacy, and past Chair and long-standing member of the CMPA. Through Degrassi, Schuyler supports the children’s advocacy organization Free The Children and their worldwide initiatives. In 2008, she joined the cast and travelled to Kenya to participate in a school-building project. In 1994, in recognition of her contribution to Canadian television programming, Schuyler was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.

The Gemini Awards are taking place in November with the Industry Galas (ie most of Degrassi’s awards) being handed out on Nov. 2nd & 3rd and the Broadcast Gala taking place on Nov. 13th. Degrassi is nominated for a total of 5 awards this year, as well as the special Fave TV Show award which fans can vote for!

Stephen Stohn to be Inducted Into Hall of Fame

Degrassi executive producer Stephen Stohn is being inducted into the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame! Stohn, along with rock legends Bachman & Turner and broadcast pioneer Bill Evanov, will be honoured for his contribution to Canada’s musical heritage. The celebration will take place during the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards gala on March 10th, 2011 in Toronto.

The press release calls Stohn “a pillar of Canadian show business” and says:
As a lawyer, his clients have included numerous recording artists, songwriters and record companies. But Stohn also helps bring Canadian music to the world in other ways. As President of Epitome Pictures Inc. and Executive Producer of all its productions, he has for many years overseen the television series Degrassi (in its current incarnation extending over ten seasons and over 200 episodes). He also executive-produced four seasons of the dramatic music series Instant Star. Over the years these series have licensed nearly a thousand tracks of independent Canadian music, and in turn showcase that music in over 140 countries worldwide. And they have also served as a launching pad for the careers of many young actors and musicians (including Drake, who starred in Degrassi for eight seasons.)

Congratulations Stephen! We’re all so proud of you!!

Vote for Degrassi!

In honour of the Gemini Awards’ 25th anniversary, this year they are asking you to vote for your favourite Canadian TV show from the past 25 years. They have narrowed the list down to 25 shows. Of course Degrassi is on the list (we would expect no less) along with shows like Flashpoint, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Being Erica, Mr. Dressup and more!

To vote for Degrassi, all you have to do is visit http://www.favetvshow.ca & register! The winning show will be announced on Nov. 13th during the Gemini Awards broadcast as they count down the top shows from 1985 to today.

Degrassi – 1 of the 10 Best Canadian TV Shows

In honour of the Gemini Award nominations earlier this week, Toronto Life published a list of the “10 Best Canadian TV Shows of the Past 25 Years.” As expected, Degrassi made the list – with Degrassi Junior High taking the top spot!! Of course we would accept no less for Degrassi! Here’s what the article had to say:

#1. Degrassi Jr. High
All versions of the decades-spanning real-teen drama would make our top 25, but in the interest of whittling, we’re gonna go with Jr. High. It’s the classic Zit Remedy Era, back when Joey Jeremiah still had hair and Wheels had yet to lose his innocence in a hitchhiking episode gone wrong. (Is there any other kind?)
