Linda Schuyler: “I remain very hopeful that there will be a [Degrassi] reboot”

Degrassi Co-Creator Linda Schuyler has revealed some very interesting information about the Degrassi reboot. She recently did an interview with Jocelyn Claybourne AKA Degrassi Kid and Jocelyn’s Patreon supporters, and some of her comments are fascinating. You can watch the full interview at Patreon.com/degrassikid. But here are some of the highlights I found most interesting:

+Linda confirmed that the merger between WarnerMedia (which owns HBO Max) and Discovery was the main reason behind the cancellation of the HBO Max Degrassi reboot. “One of the broadcast executives [at HBO Max] had also been our broadcast executive at TeenNick, so I was so pleased about that,” she explained (side note: she’s likely referring to Tom Ascheim who oversaw The N back in the day and then because the President of Warner Bros. Kids & YA Division). However, once the merger happened, Linda says that “the first thing that the executives from Discovery did was to cancel the Children’s and Youth Department.” So this is really the main reason why the reboot didn’t move forward.

+Linda revealed that WildBrain has hired a new writer for Degrassi who is currently working on a pitch! She says that the writer is “very good” and “a name you will recognize.” WildBrain is “committed to getting the reboot happening” and they are planning to shop this pitch to networks in the near future.

+While Linda will not be producing the Degrassi reboot, she did confirm that she has been asked by WildBrain to be a Consultant! This is very exciting, because it means she will still have some involvement in the show, even if it’s in a smaller capacity.

+The Hollywood strike is also complicating things at the moment. “Even though this is a Canadian show, we need to get an American partner in on it. And there is just nothing happening in the States right now. So no broadcasters are doing deals,” said Linda.

All of this is very interesting! I’m curious who this writer is. Linda said it’s someone we will know. Does that mean the person worked on Degrassi previously? Or is it someone who has built a name for themselves in another capacity? Either way, I can’t wait to find out what he has planned!

35 Years of Degrassi: My top 10 All Time Favourite Degrassi Moments

What is your favourite moment in Degrassi history?

This is a question that gets asked a lot in the Degrassi fandom. With 35 years of history and 400+ episodes spanning multiple generations, there are a lot of moments to choose from. Within those 35 years, Degrassi has had moments that are funny, heart wrenching, awkward, uncomfortable, painful, joyous, empowering, relatable… the list goes on and on.

What I loved most about Degrassi when I was growing up was how connected I felt to some of the storylines. There were scenes that I would watch over and over and over again as a teenager, because it was a way for me to be able to articulate how I felt and know that other people out there were feeling it too.

I’ve always wanted to make a blog post about this, but the challenge of narrowing down 35 years of incredible Degrassi moments into a list of 10 seemed like an impossible task. However, with a little patience and perseverance I think I’ve finally done just that!

Disclaimer: This is a list of the top 10 Degrassi moments that mean the most to me personally. I’m not claiming that these are the “best” Degrassi moments of all time, as you will notice that there are a number of important Degrassi moments missing from this list (e.g. the school shooting, Spike’s pregnancy, Marco’s coming out storyline, etc.). This list is 100% subjective, and I’m sure if you asked 10 different Degrassi fans this exact question you would get 10 different answers.

Without further ado, here are my all-time favourite Degrassi moments…

Degrassi Design Competition: And the Winners Are…

Congratulations to the winner and runner up in our Degrassi Design Competition!

I am very excited to announce that the winning design is the Degrassi Cardigan submitted by Amanda! The cardigan received the highest number of votes from the fans, and it was the top choice amongst the contest officiators. This winning design will inspire a new product in the Degrassi online store.

Degrassi Cardigan by Amanda

The Degrassi Crest Cardigan. It’s casual and subtle way to share your degrassi pride, as if you attended the school yourself. The crest is the one shown in the previous DTG Logo put at the top left breast corner of a charcoal cardigan. It goes well with any outfit and is timeless due to how discreet and trendy the style.

The runner up is Alysha who submitted the Degrassi Sweatpants idea. Congratulations to Alysha who will receive a coupon to be used in the Degrassi online store!

Degrassi Sweatpants by Alysha

Today, everyone loves sweatpants. People go to school in them, relax in them, and you can never have enough. Sweatpants that come in black, grey, or dark blue, with either the words “Degrassi” or “Panthers” down the left or right side of the leg (all in capitals). Black and dark blue sw eatpants with white letters, and Grey sweatpants with darker letters. It can also have the Degrassi school logo near the top right of the pants. People could be advertising their favourite school everywhere, and it’s something easy for the cast and crew sport while on set, or out and about. Sorry for my paint version of my drawing…im a worse artist. Obviously I am open to flexibility on the material and other things. I was thinking along the lines of what high school “spirit wear” would look like. I kind of modeled this idea from my high school pants and university pants that I’ve seen people around campus wear. Make them comfy, make them bold and make them the best sweatpants around.

Congratulations to all of our finalists! A special thank you to all Degrassi fans who submitted designs. We had a lot of fun going through your creative and inspiring entries!

Five Reasons Why People Love Degrassi

Most people have heard of Degrassi, even if they don’t watch it, but for those people who go crazy every time a new episode is released, there are several obvious reasons that people love it almost as much as food, sleep, air, Foxy Bingo (c’mon, you know it, I know it) and milkshakes. Here’s our five:

1) The drama. Whether it’s about relationships, friendships, money, drugs – there’s rarely a calm day in the world of Degrassi, and it means you’ll never be bored watching it.

2) A wide range of characters. Doesn’t matter who you are, it’s likely you’ll find someone in the show’s extensive cast to relate to, and their struggles will be far more poignant for reviewers as a result.

3) A long run. If you’re worried you’ll run out, you should be fine – there are over ten seasons, and with that many episodes it’s going to be a long while before you find you’re completely up to date. And that’s before you delve into the retro stuff!

4) A huge fan community. If you love getting in touch with people who love the show, then you’re watching the right one, as the online fanbase for Degrassi is absolutely huge. You’ll never be lost for people to discuss the show with, and there are new fans (like you, perhaps!) joining Degrassi fan-sites and forums all the time!

5) The ability to watch it online. Degrassi is definitely for the digital generation, as you can watch it online, which means that if you’ve got a PC, a tablet PC, a laptop, browser-enabled games console, smartphone… you get the idea: you can watch this show how you like, when you like.

Degrassi just keeps on getting better, and these are only five of countless reasons why people love the show. Feel free to share yours!

Vote in the Much Music Pepsi Refresh Challenge!

Voting is now underway in the Much Pepsi Refresh Challenge. Much Music and Pepsi have chosen 3 finalists in each category (Education, Sports, and Music), and your votes will determine the winners! Head on over to MuchMusic.com/Refresh to vote!! Voting is open until August 29th.

I encourage everyone to check out all 9 finalists, and choose a story that is close to your heart. But I recently received an email from one of the education finalists – Brittany – that I wanted to share with all of you. Brittany is looking for $5000 to provide basic products to young people staying at Youth Without a Shelter with Rotaract Club members at York University. Here is what she had to say:

Youth Without Shleter is a great organization that provides a safe place for homeless youth to stay, while they go back to school. I am a member of the Rotaract Club at York University, and we made lunches for the shelter on one day. Our club is limited in funding, but with $5000 I would get them the following:
1) lunches once a week
2) moving out packages (bed linens, blanket, pillow, dishes, pots, pans, towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, laundry basket, and laundry detergent)
3) hygiene products
4) tokens for the subway
5) school supplies

Basically, I would like to help provide the basic needs the shelter uses everyday, so that the youth can concentrate on their school work and not worry about necessities.
YWS is a great organization. If you want to find out more you can look at their website (www.yws.on.ca).

Thanks to Brittany for sending this in! Now everyone head on over to MuchMusic.com/Refresh and vote!!

Degrassi Films Prom and Graduation Scenes

It was an emotional time on the Degrassi set this week, as several cast members filmed their last scenes. According to Twitter, prom and graduation scenes were filmed this week. It doesn’t come as a surprise that many of the graduating characters are leaving the show. Degrassi has not done any university storylines this past year, and the focus seems to be on the school itself. Still, it was sad to see the heartfelt goodbyes from the cast on Twitter. Here is some of what they had to say:

@RayAblack My warm thanks to everyone who shared in my Degrassi experience. I’m honoured to have been part of this family, sad to say goodbye.

@anniejclark Incredible day on set with @_samanthamunro, Jajube and Char. Degrassi won’t be the same without you.

@aislinnpaul Wow. Amazing day at work today. Blood, sweat, and tears were shed. Especially tears.

@ShannonKook Saying goodbye to #Degrassi corridors with @ArgirisKarras . Final walks are strange. #Graduation http://yfrog.com/kiyl2aj

@ArgirisKarras That’s a wrap! Finished my last scene with @ShannonKook. When I say last, I mean last. It’s been fun! You guys will like the bittersweet end

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving Canada! I’m lazy and this is the exact same graphic I used for the Thanksgiving post last year. Paige’s face says it all. In fairness, this is the only Thanksgiving episode of Degrassi – haha! I hope you all enjoy today & tomorrow. Be thankful that another new Degrassi episode is only 5 days away!
