Degrassi Wins Over Critic

If you’ve been reading this site for the past year or so, you’ll know that I get a lot of information about CTV’s Degrassi ratings from this blog written by Toronto TV critic Bill Brioux. Usually, not only does he indicate the kind of numbers Degrassi got for its latest episode, but he also repeatedly states that he thinks that Degrassi should be cancelled, that it sucks, that CTV is stupid for keeping it on the air, etc.

But Degrassi has worked its magic once again. In a new entry he describes his visit to the Degrassi set and a newfound appreciation for our favourite show! He says that the set is “comparable to the kinds of major studio back lot exteriors that are all but paved over in Burbank and Hollywood” and that he’s never seen “a cast, crew and especially production executives make young guests feel so welcome.” Check out some pictures and read his full set report right here!

Lauren Collins talks style and shopping

The Toronto Star talked to Lauren Collins recently about her shopping habits as well as the upcoming Degrassi Goes Hollywood movie. Lauren discussed some of her favourite Toronto shops such as Robber at 863 Queen St. W. and Vintage 69 at 1100 Queen St. W. She named the Olson twins as her style icons and said that she loves going through her grandmother’s closet.

On the Degrassi Goes Hollywood movie, Lauren said:

“The movie ends with Paige in a pretty dark place – I hope she can get out of that funk. Relationships that have bloomed for nine years are threatened. I can’t believe I’ve been on the show for nine years.”

Cassie Talks about Body Image and her Beauty Routine

Cassie Steele did an interview recently in which she talks about her beauty regimen (surprisingly simple), what she does to stay healthy, as well as her new CD coming out on July 21st. When asked what makes someone beautiful, Cassie replied:

“People being themselves. Someone who is easy to be with, and has no walls up. No intense baggage. When you meet somebody you can tell they are thinking about something else when they are saying something, or when they are jaded. I want to hang out with people that are good hearted and have good intentions.”

Drake’s New Music Video

Drake’s music video for “The Best I Ever Had” has been released! You can watch it right here on Youtube. The video was directed by Kanye West.

Drake also spoke to Complex Blog recently and talked about how he is proud of his Degrassi past. He told the blog: “There are artists that I feel could be doing a lot better for themselves that go on there and kill their own careers by just talking too much, and I think that they took that personally and now all they do is air Degrassi clips of me and potential things that could embarrass me. But with me, man…the great thing about me being me in this game is that I’ve been so honest up until this point, I really have nothing to hide, I don’t fear any clip, you know? It’s out there already, everyone knows that’s my story. At the end of the day, it’s part of me, it’s my stepping stone. I’m proud of every moment thus far.”

New Trailer for Melinda Shankar’s TV Series

A new trailer has now appeared online Melinda Shankar’s new TV series “How to be Indie.” Melinda plays the title character “Indie,” who is a girl trying to fit in at school, but with traditional parents. Decode Entertainment (the production company) posted the trailer at their official website along with this description:

So you’re different. Your name is Indie (“Indira” to your parents), you’re 13 and your only job is to grow up. Sounds simple enough, but things get tricky when you’re trying to blend in at school but your traditional parents are pretty fond of their old-school values … So what’s a girl to do? Try to make it work in her own unique way.

More Drake Craziness

A new article in the Toronto Star describes Drake’s rise to fame, and includes quotes from Linda Schuyler. Drake’s level of success has been blowing our minds for the last few months, and this article is no different. It describes Drake as “rap’s hottest property” and states that he is searched online even more than Eminem, who just released a new album. Here’s an interesting excerpt in which they describe his time on Degrassi and growing up as a racial minority:

Degrassi co-creater Linda Schuyler remembers Drake (it’s his middle name) as “very charismatic, even as a rather awkward 13-year-old when he started here. He had a way of connecting with people. We would do these mall tours, 3,000 to 4,000 teens screaming for the Degrassi kids, and you could see that Aubrey set off that energy.”
Wilson said the offspring of a Memphis-based black musician dad and white Jewish educator in Forest Hill is a border-hopping barrier-crosser. “He’s Canadian, he’s half-Jewish, that’s a novelty,” he explained. “Stereotypes of region and race are being challenged, yet he has no credibility issues and he’s comfortable in his own skin.”
It wasn’t always that way. In 2006, Drake spoke with the Star about being a racial minority at Forest Hill Collegiate. “It was very awkward,” he said. “I never had a girlfriend. Not one of those girls would bring me home. It would be too risky.”
“His parents represented two different sides of life,” said Schuyler. “As he got older, he needed to find ways to reconcile those two different influences. Music was a wonderful outlet for him and he turned out to be extraordinarily talented.”
