Some exciting news for the cast and crew of Degrassi this morning, as the series was nominated for a Banff Rockies Award at the Banff Television Festival!
Degrassi is one of the Youth Programs (13+) Fiction finalists. Other finalists include KRIMI.DE – Schuldig (Germany), The Fades (United Kingdom), Leonardo (United Kingdom), 13 Hours – Race Against Time (Germany), and Heartland (Canada).
Degrassi is nominated for the “Extraordinary Machine” episode from last summer. From BanffMediaFestival.com:
This episode features three slice of life stories. The teens are forced to deal with the all too adult situations of recognizing mental illness, the consequences of drug use, and giving a baby up for adoption. Each story focuses on its main characters as they deal with the direct consequences of their decisions. In this single episode the viewer gets a small taste of each character’s season-long journey of discovery: learning just how strong they can really be.
The Banff World Media Awards are an internationally-recognized award program awarding the best in television and digital media from around the world. The winners will be presented at the Banff World Media Festival on June 10-13, 2012.

This week’s Entertainment Weekly includes a small blurb on Degrassi with some interesting information! According to the mag, Holly J. will appear in the last 2 episodes of season 11. They also give away the names and ages of season 12’s new character. The short article draws attention to Degrassi’s 12th season, which will also include its 300th episode.
“Most teen series struggle as their lead actors age, but EW has learned that TeenNick has just begun production on the 12th(!) season of Degrassi, which will premiere this summer and contian the show’s 300th episode. The secret to the Canadian drama’s success: allowing its high school seniors to graduate and disappear instead of following them into the AARP. To that end, Degrassi will introduce four new characters – Campbell (grade 10), Mike (grade 12), and siblings Luke and Becky (grade 11). But before that, season 11 – which airs Fridays at 9 p.m. – will wrap up with the return of a fan favourite. Recent grad Holly J (Charlotte Arnold) drops in for the final two episodes (May 11 and 18) to help her best friend, Fiona (Annie Clark) with relationship and family troubles.”

Netflix still finds a home for Landon Liboiron despite passing on the pick up of his recent series Terra Nova. Landon has been cast as Peter in the new series Hemlock Grove which will air on Netflix in early 2013. The Hollywood Reporter has released this bit of information on the show’s premise and Landon’s character:
The 13-episode horror show from director/executive producer Eli Roth is set in a ravaged Pennsylvania steel town and begins with the discovery of a young girl’s body. As the crime goes unsolved and outlandish rumors mount, Roman (Bill Skarsgard) and Peter (Liboiron) decide to find the killer on their own, confronting unspeakable truths about themselves and Hemlock Grove as the mystery unfolds.
Terra Nova has not been completely abandon by 20th Century Fox according to reports but Landon, on his newly acquired twitter account, confirmed the out look isn’t good.
Landon has also created a new YouTube channel after his last one was accidentally deleted and loaded his music to Pure Volume.

Degrassi stars Cassie Steele and Annie Clark were both at the Juno Awards last night in Ottawa. They were there to present the Dance Recording of the Year award along with Francois Arnaud from The Borgias. Annie looked adorable in this neon pink strapless dress, while Cassie chose a revealing leather number that I’m sure turned a lot of heads. Check out more pictures from the event in our gallery!

The annual Kids Choice Awards were held last night in Los Angeles, and our own Luke Bilyk was there to represent the Degrassi franchise. Luke was able to chat with some fans and walk the red carpet at the big event. He looked amazing in a light summer blazer and some very cool sunglasses. Former Degrassi cast member and current star of The LA Complex, Cassie Steele, recently spoke with HollywoodLife.com, expressing interest in returning to Degrassi. While nothing is confirmed yet, Cassie said that she would like to return if the right storyline came along. Lauren Collins recently returned to Degrassi for a brief appearance in a webisode. Would Cassie be willing to do the same?
“I’m not on the show anymore, so it’s not about us anymore, and we really need to capitalize on the new characters — the budding careers these young actors have. It has to suit their story line. So if I have the chance, I’d love to. It’s a really big part of my life, and it’s so great to see these young adults working and being amazing at what they’re doing.”
Its nice to see Cassie talk about how she would love to be back on Degrassi, yet she’s still so supportive of the new cast members!

Alicia Josipovic plays Bianca, Degrassi’s resident bad girl. She recently did an interview with social media mavericks ClevverTV. They had a chance to chat with Alicia about what really goes on behind the scenes, her dream guest stars, and where she sees Bianca in the future.
Of particular adorableness, Alicia discussed the friendships amongst the cast and a certain Italian mafia family…
The cast seems like such good friends. When you aren’t filming, what are you all doing between takes? Any pranks?
We really are the best of friends. There have been so many fun and memorable times together. Sometimes it can get pretty chaotic when the entire cast is on set. It’s like a circus/comedy show. Last season four other cast members (Luke, Munro, Daniel Kelly, Justin) and myself created an Italian mafia family. So when the cameras weren’t rolling, we would snap out of our Degrassi characters and go into our mobster characters. We didn’t mess around! I wished we had filmed it, it would have been a great series!

The University of Toronto’s student newspaper, The Varsity, posted an interview with former Degrassi cast member Judy Jiao earlier today. Judy played Leia on Degrassi for a couple of seasons before becoming a student at Harvard. In the interview, Judy talks about the difference between Degrassi and her real life high school, her favourite places in Toronto, and her plans for the future.
On why Toronto teens in particular love Degrassi, Judy had this to say: “It is very representative of Toronto; it shows how Toronto embraces multiculturalism. It’s something Degrassi does amazingly. Canada is unique. If you look at Canada and America culturally, they are very similar but very different in terms of multiculturalism. The concept has a different connotation in the States than in Canada. Here we embrace it, and Degrassi shows that.”
