Interview: Jessica Tyler with Channel Guide Magazine

What’s going on with Jenna this season? We haven’t heard too much. But in a new interview with Channel Guide Magazine, Degrassi star Jessica Tyler gave us a few hints.

In the interview, Jessica also discusses the very popular (and intense) adoption storyline from season 11 as well as her music on and off the show. As for Jenna’s storyline in season 12, it looks like Jenna will be trying to move forward from last season:

So what’s going on in Season 12 so far? What should we expect for Jenna and in general?
Right now, we’re about halfway through the season that we’re filming now, but when we come back, in terms of Jenna, she will have just broken up with K.C. and given the baby away, so she’s coming back to school hoping to have a fresh start, maybe make some new friends and try to move on from the past in a positive way.
Basically, this whole season is about picking sides between the characters here. There’s all of this drama going on, as always, so Jenna and Becky — a new character — they become friends, and as Jenna’s values in life and views start to change, it’s all about picking sides and what’s right, what’s wrong this season. It’s kind of like that for every character

Interview: Alex Steele with the Toronto Sun

The countdown to season 12 is on! With only one more week before the highly anticipated season premiere, I think we can expect a lot of cast interviews coming out the next few days.

One of those interviews is with fan favourite Alex Steele, who recently did an interview with the Toronto Sun. In the interview, Alex talks about her Degrassi past as Angela Jeremiah and how she got back into acting again.

On returning to the show after her last episode in 2006, Alex said: “It’s a little strange to look back and think I was a totally different character, just, like, eating cake and having an older brother, and now I’m actually part of the cast at Degrassi, dealing with my own problems.

We can’t wait to see what happens to Tori this season! Read the full article on TorontoSun.com.

Munro presented an award to Justin Bieber towards the end of the evening. He also answered some questions in the press room (see above video), and talked about aspiring to follow in Ryan Gosling’s footsteps, what it’s like to be called a “sex symbol,” and what we can expect from Eli in season 12.

Cassie Steele Talks About Returning to Degrassi

Former Degrassi cast member and current star of The LA Complex, Cassie Steele, recently spoke with HollywoodLife.com, expressing interest in returning to Degrassi. While nothing is confirmed yet, Cassie said that she would like to return if the right storyline came along. Lauren Collins recently returned to Degrassi for a brief appearance in a webisode. Would Cassie be willing to do the same?

I’m not on the show anymore, so it’s not about us anymore, and we really need to capitalize on the new characters — the budding careers these young actors have. It has to suit their story line. So if I have the chance, I’d love to. It’s a really big part of my life, and it’s so great to see these young adults working and being amazing at what they’re doing.”

Its nice to see Cassie talk about how she would love to be back on Degrassi, yet she’s still so supportive of the new cast members!

ClevverTV Interviews Alicia Josipovic

Alicia Josipovic plays Bianca, Degrassi’s resident bad girl. She recently did an interview with social media mavericks ClevverTV. They had a chance to chat with Alicia about what really goes on behind the scenes, her dream guest stars, and where she sees Bianca in the future.

Of particular adorableness, Alicia discussed the friendships amongst the cast and a certain Italian mafia family…

The cast seems like such good friends. When you aren’t filming, what are you all doing between takes? Any pranks?
We really are the best of friends. There have been so many fun and memorable times together. Sometimes it can get pretty chaotic when the entire cast is on set. It’s like a circus/comedy show. Last season four other cast members (Luke, Munro, Daniel Kelly, Justin) and myself created an Italian mafia family. So when the cameras weren’t rolling, we would snap out of our Degrassi characters and go into our mobster characters. We didn’t mess around! I wished we had filmed it, it would have been a great series!

An Update on Former Degrassi Cast Member Judy Jiao

The University of Toronto’s student newspaper, The Varsity, posted an interview with former Degrassi cast member Judy Jiao earlier today. Judy played Leia on Degrassi for a couple of seasons before becoming a student at Harvard. In the interview, Judy talks about the difference between Degrassi and her real life high school, her favourite places in Toronto, and her plans for the future.

On why Toronto teens in particular love Degrassi, Judy had this to say: “It is very representative of Toronto; it shows how Toronto embraces multiculturalism. It’s something Degrassi does amazingly. Canada is unique. If you look at Canada and America culturally, they are very similar but very different in terms of multiculturalism. The concept has a different connotation in the States than in Canada. Here we embrace it, and Degrassi shows that.

TeenNick Interviews Annie Clark

In light of Fiona’s storyline tonight, TeenNick has posted a new interview with Annie Clark. While Annie was in LA last month, she talked to TeenNick’s blogger Lisa about playing Fiona, her celebrity crush, Fiona’s upcoming storylines, and getting her driver’s license.

Most Degrassi fans would agree that Fiona’s alcoholism storyline has been a highlight from the past few seasons. In this interview, Annie explained how Fiona is still dealing with her addiction. “She’s still struggling with the whole drinking thing,” Annie said. “That’s one of my favorite things that the writers did with my storyline, because it wasn’t just like “oh, for these four episodes, she’s going to have a drinking problem.” It’s something she’s been struggling with for like two seasons. It’s consistent.

Annie also discusses the writer’s decision to keep Fiona back a year: “That’s the only circumstance where you tell people you’re failing and they’re like “Congratulations!” We also joke that like, if you get a problem on the show, it’s like “Congratulations, you’re going to have so many storylines!” Like, you want to get an STI or something.

The Secret to Degrassi’s Success

With the recent premiere of Landon Liboiron’s new show Terra Nova, it’s clear that Degrassi is still one of the top teen shows for discovering new talent. From Shenae Grimes to Nina Dobrev, several of Degrassi’s cast members have gone on to take Hollywood by storm.

In a new interview with The TV Addict, Degrassi executive producer/writer/director/actor Stefan Brogren explains his thoughts on the secret to Degrassi’s success:

I think it has a lot to do with the show’s caring environment that allows young actors to flourish … Our kids are getting a lot of education while they’re behind these walls that allows them to experiment. That and, we’re always putting these characters through hell which means they have to grow and they never get soft about it. We don’t want to keep these kids on a certain plain and they’re always trying to take it to the next level.

He also discusses the importance of Degrassi being an ensemble effort:

I think a big part of our alumni’s success is that the show is not a star vehicle for one person, it really is a group activity in a lot of ways. We get them when they’re young where they have to learn to work with others. So if this place was an acting school, the one thing that they’re learning is to be giving to their other actors and I think that’s a big big thing that a lot of young actors miss is that there’s some give and take involved. They come out of here really well rounded people in a lot of ways and they’ve learned a lot of skills.

My take: You definitely get the sense that Degrassi is more like a performing arts company as opposed to a TV show. The current cast of Degrassi are well aware that this show has been around longer than they’ve even been alive, so they become a part of the group instead of the “star.” The Degrassi cast are given the opportunity to experience fame in small doses, but still represent the longstanding Degrassi “brand.” I’m proud of all of our cast members, and I’m sure they will continue to find success in the future.

Lyle O’Donohoe Joins the Cast of Degrassi

A new article in Collingwood, Ontario’s local paper The Enterprise-Bulletin introduces us to one of the new cast members we will see in the second half of season 11.

Lyle O’Donohoe is joining the cast of Degrassi as a new grade 9 character named Tristan. The article describes Tristan as “loud, in your face and he doesn’t care if you find him annoying … Like many Degrassi divas before him, Tristan wants to direct the musical, plan the dances, and be at the top of the Power Squad pyramid.”

The character is apparently Owen Milligan’s younger brother. Given the fact that Owen is known as a homophobic bully type of character on Degrassi, it sounds like Tristan will be an interesting character.

According to Lyle himself, “Tristan is someone who is very confident within himself … I think he is going to be joining a lot of school clubs, stuff like that. I think his confidence may come off as a bit snobby sometimes.”

A self proclaimed fan of Lady Gaga, Andy Warhol, and Marilyn Monroe, Lyle’s personality shines through even in this short interview. The 16-year-old has apparently been watching Degrassi for a very long time. “Degrassi is a show I have dreamed of being on ever since I started acting,” said O’Donohoe. “I became obsessed with the show, I loved it so much and I thought it would be really cool to be on the show, but at the time I was only 10 … It was worth the wait.”

Welcome to the Degrassi family Lyle! Click here to read the complete article.

Interview with Charlotte Arnold

On Tuesday,  Ology interviewed Charlotte Arnold. The piece was released today and covers her thoughts on leaving Degrassi, what’s next for her, the future for Holly J, and other insights. She also shares a little bit about tonight’s mid season finale.

On shooting her last scene:

“It was sad: I think that in the scene itself I was kind of wrapped up in the dialogue and getting the action down, but when they’d say “cut,” I’d look around and just see our supervisor Nancy, and [the crew] doing what they’ll still be doing after we leave; it was so sad. I shed a few tears that day. And when they announce that you’re done for good; they say “that was a season wrap on Charlotte!” that was another big cry!”

“We took a limo off-set and the last thing that I ever shot was me and Annie and Samantha and Jajube in a limo, driving around with our heads out the window, singing Green Day and just having a really great time.”

On tonight’s episode

“Well, there’s some bloodshed.  It’s a pretty intense climax at prom. There’s a storyline that’s been going on this entire season since the spring break special, with Drew dealing with post-traumatic stress and Bianca dealing with her past; that comes to a huge head–a boiling point, if you will!–at the prom, so that’s something that, I think, will shock people with how it turns out. And then, of course, for my own character, whether she’s going to get her kidney transplant, whether she’ll live after that. There a couple of moments where people are going to be shocked. So saying goodbye to all the seniors is a huge deal and seeing how the younger grades deal with the events at prom should be interesting.”

The article includes her favorite Holly J storyline, relationship and other moments as well as her thought’s on season 11’s most notable couples. Read it all here

Munro Chambers was interviewed about the Degrassi summer season finale by Eonline. In the interview he also talks about Eli’s progress, the love square of Clare/Eli/Jake/Imogen, and the perks of being Eli’s girlfriend.

On the finale

“It’s going to be tear-jerking, your heart’s going to be racing a mile a minute, and it’s going to be intense.”

“It’s a long season. Anything can happen. It’s Degrassi!”

 On Eli’s mental status

“He’s trying to get better. He knows he needs to get better, he understands it. I think he’s on the right path now, I’m happy for him because I feel like he’s been crazy for a long time. I’m glad he’s found peace in a way, not complete peace, but he’s starting to get better.”

An Interview With Degrassi Writer Brendon Yorke

The Sault Star posted this new interview with Degrassi writer and executive producer Brendon Yorke. Brendon has been around Degrassi for a long time (JT Yorke was named after him). He is now the head writer on Degrassi, so naturally he had a lot to say about the success and controversy of the show.

In the interview, Brendon discusses how Degrassi is relatable, with real stories that everyone experiences. He says that while not everyone has directly been involved with many of these issues, they have at least heard of them happening. He talks about how social media has changed the high school landscape, but maintains that high school is essentially high school, whatever the era.

“That’s another reason why a show like this sort of resonates, because everyone was in high school at some point,” Yorke said.

“On a human level, the stuff that people are going through in high school now is the same as it’s been since it was such a thing called high school 100 years ago or whatever … or at least since it was co-ed.

“There’s all the different pressures and different technologies and all that kind of thing. Pop culture turns over every five years, or whatever, so (we) sort of have to keep on top of that. Effectively, the struggles, goals, hopes and dreams of kids, have generally been the same as they always have.”

He also mentions being compared to Glee, and introducing new characters:

“We just finished a graduating episode … At the end of this summer, we’ll graduate the last of the second influx of characters that we had, and we’re bringing in new ones,” he added.

“So, you can sort of replenish as you go along.”

Yorke said Entertainment Weekly recently compared Degrassi “pretty favourably” to Glee, which, unlike its Canadian counterpart, is “struggling” to figure out what to do with its graduating cast.

“We actually held up an example of how to keep things fresh and new blood injected there and how to do it seamlessly,” Yorke said.

The article also confirms that Degrassi cast and crew will be in LA next month for the Emmy Awards. However, Degrassi’s award will likely be handed out a week earlier than the televised ceremony.

Ray Ablack & Cory Lee TeenNick Interview!

The-Mary (or does she just go by Mary now?) from TeenNick visited the Degrassi set and got to talk to Ray Ablack and Cory Lee! She talked to Ray about leaving Degrassi, and also talked with Cory Lee about Ms. Oh and Sav’s new “romance.”

Here’s a few questions from the interview:

Did either of you ever have a crush on a teacher in high school?
CORY: I think it might be more of a guy thing? I didn’t have any crushes on any of my male teachers…
RAY: I totally forgot: Ms. Diaz. She was a science teacher. The last night of the school play, down in the basement there was a big dance for the cast and crew, and she was there chaperoning. And I asked her to dance with me, and she said no. But I had a huge crush on Ms. Diaz.

I can’t believe she said no! Well, I guess I can…
RAY: I think she liked me, that’s why.
CORY: [sad trombone noise]

Jake Epstein recently talked to BroadwayWorld.com about Billy Elliot, Degrassi and his dream roles. Right now, Jake is starring as Billy’s older brother in the Toronto production of Billy Elliot- which runs til September 3rd at the Canon Theatre.

Here’s what he had to say about people still noticing him from Degrassi!:

You have a pretty intense fanbase with a lot of younger people from your days on Degrassi – do you feel that this show would appeal to them and would you encourage people who know you mostly from that to come and check this out?

I’m always surprised at how many people remember me from Degrassi. The fact is, Billy Elliot is an incredible show, for any age and any gender. Degrassi fans would absolutely fall in love with Billy Elliot.
